Jury rules a verdict of suicide
A Coroner’s Inquest on Tuesday 3 April into the death of American citizen Francis Xavier Delessio ended with the jury finding that the 49-year-old’s death was the result of suicide.
Mr. Delessio was a consultant for Sagicor General at the time of his death. He lived in Grand Cayman with his wife and children. On 3 March, 2009, he was found unresponsive in a bathtub at his home with both his wrists cut.
On the day of his death, Mr. Delessio was in an automobile accident during the morning hours when he crashed his car into a large truck near Bodden Town.
Detective Inspector Burton of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service testified that the car accident was probably a first attempt at suicide because, “There was no apparent reason for him to swerve into an oncoming truck.”
Mr. Delessio’s injuries were not serious and he was released from hospital where his wife and his friend brought him home.
Written testimony from his stepchildren in the home revealed that he went to his room after smoking a cigarette and was not heard from or seen again. Upon returning home in the evening his wife found both his bedroom door locked as well as the one to the en-suite bathroom. After breaking the lock on both doors she found her husband with both his wrists cut sitting in the bathtub. An orange box cutter was found nearby.
Two doctors testified they had been treating Mr. Delessio for depression, pain, anxiety and other matters since 2005.
