Just Released from CAP Press: Optimizing Patient Care Through Continuous Quality Improvement

Northfield, Ill. (May 15, 2024) — Quality Management in Clinical Laboratories: Optimizing Patient Care Through Continuous Quality Improvement, is the newest release from CAP Press. This second edition book includes ten free-standing chapters, covering everything from laboratory staff and informatics to all phases of testing and the laboratory quality management plan.

With contributions from 21 authors, including current and former members of the Quality Practices Committee, “this book is intended for pathologists, particularly those new in practice, pathology residents, and clinical laboratory scientists who may be called upon to become a laboratory director or assist with laboratory director responsibilities,” explains editor, Richard Brown, MD, FCAP. ” It is a hands-on, how-to guide containing practical tips from the authors’ practices, such as how to troubleshoot quality control failures, perform carryover studies, and lot-to-lot comparisons. It also includes samples of interpretive comments that can be used for reporting complex laboratory studies and numerous examples of quality metrics encompassing various areas of the laboratory,” adds Dr. Brown.

The topics covered in this edition span a variety of subjects, including ongoing quality enhancement and implementation tools. It also explores regulatory concerns, obstacles encountered in various phases of testing, the formulation of quality management plans, the involvement of informatics in quality control, and the pivotal role of pathologists in extending laboratory quality communication beyond its confines. Two sections of the chapter on quality management in the clinical microbiology laboratory, by Gary W. Procop, MD, MS, FCAP, and Ronald B. Schifman, MD are available in CAP Today.
