Ken Thompson & Paul Pearson – Davenport Development, Cayman Islands
Since establishing Davenport Development in 2004, this dynamic duo have carved out a niche for themselves by filling a gap in Cayman’s property market to provide affordable, luxury homes that are exceptionally built and innovatively designed. Now working on their fifth project, Vela, the pair share a love for their getaway go-to, but part ways when it comes to their must-haves: Ken can’t live without Island Taste patties while Paul needs to travel.
RL: How did you come to be developers in Cayman?
KT: After Hurricane Ivan, we decided to try our hands at property development. We were entrepreneurs who thought we could build better value for dollar housing and not deliver cookie-cutter homes.
RL: With your developments, what are you trying to bring to Cayman?
KT: Great value for dollar and thinking outside the norm. We build using Flowers Foam Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF), which results in great energy savings while being exceptionally strong. Owners save money and we build hurricane safe homes. It’s a win-win.
RL: Describe your design sense and how it has evolved since the initial property.
PP: People are more discerning than when we started and expect a lot of value for money in terms of amenities. On the flipside, they are willing to take chances and this has allowed us to introduce new design elements into our properties.
RL: What are you working on at present?
KT: We are preparing ‘Vela’ in South Sound. It’s three phases of 56 town-homes. Each phase will have amazing ocean views, an Olympic-length swimming pool and all the Davenport Development amenities that our clientele have come to love, such as onsite gyms and clubhouses.
RL: What are the hallmarks of a Davenport build?
PP: Up-to-date designs, building with ICF, lush gardens where people can socialise and be part of a community, great amenities, unbelievable pools and, of course, great value for dollar.
KT: By keeping parking to the outside perimeter we are able to design our properties around the pool/garden area. This provides owners with peace of mind that once inside the courtyard gate they can enjoy their home without worry of the kids being hurt by cars or wandering off, since these areas are secured by gates and foliage.
RL: What is your design mantra?
KT: If we design and build great properties, the clientele will follow.
