Kenny Chesney is still heavily involved in recovery efforts in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, which experienced heavy damage in the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria earlier this year. His focus these days is slightly different than it was when he started, however.

Kenny first stepped up to help the people most affected by the disaster, many of whom were his neighbors on the island of St. John. “We did all we could to try for the people who were struggling there,” Kenny tells USA Today. “We flew generators and coolers down there. You bring them to these people who have been without power for two months and they’re literally crying. They appreciate anything you can do because they need it so badly.”

But as Kenny has team worked they began to notice a large number of animals that had been left behind by evacuees. “Once we got past the anxiety of getting water to people and taking care of their basic needs, [we] contacted Big Dog Ranch in Florida and Island Dog Rescue in St. John, St. Thomas and Vieques in Puerto Rico,” Kenny continues. “Next thing you know, we’ve got three or four planes going down there to get these animals healthy and safe.”

To date, Kenny and his team have transported more than 250 animals to the U.S., but there’s still work to be done. Love For Love City donations are still needed here. Read more about Kenny’s relief work in USA Today here.
