Kids in Lifeguard Swim Training

Swimm pool wideA group of 25 young people are enjoying fun in the sun this summer, as the first to attend Junior Lifeguard Training in the Cayman Islands.

The youths, from 10-15-years of age, are participants in this week’s camp at the Lions Aquatic Centre in George Town. They have been attending morning half-day sessions, when they are put through drills and receive instruction at the pool, as well as going to Seven Mile Beach for seaside training outings.

Senior Swim Instructor Ryan Mushin and three other coaches began with teambuilding exercises and safety instruction, before putting the class through basic safety and rescue paces, in areas such as: stroke-styles, lap-swimming and basic life-saving techniques for pool or open-water.

Many of these boys and girls already have an interest in watersports, either as members of the facility’s Stingray Swim Club, or as participants in the Learn to Swim programme.

The local Red Cross a provided the training materials, and the young lifeguards to-be are being encouraged to continue their training with Red Cross certification classes in CPR and other areas.

There has also been wider community buy-in, such as snacks donated by Progressive Distributors, and watersports operators lending paddleboards and other equipment for use in open-water sessions – and for summer fun.

Another Lifeguard Training Class session will be held next week, and parents or students are encouraged to register as soon as possible. The cost is $25 for the entire week.
