Koala found more than 300 yards offshore rescued by coast guard

By JOHNNY LIEU From Mashable

Koalas aren’t really that well known for their swimming abilities.

Yet they sometimes find themselves off land, as the folks from the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard discovered. They found the marsupial on mooring 300 metres (328 yards) off the coast of Warneet in Victoria, according to the Herald Sun.

“The crew noticed the koala hanging onto a rope, so they saved him by getting him back on board,” Jeremy West, commander of the Westernport coast guard, told the newspaper.

It was covered in a blanket, then taken to dry land where it was released in the surrounding area on Quail Island, where it probably won’t try its hand at swimming again.

This little guy is the latest in a run of koalas getting up to mischief, including one who found itself stuck on top of a drilling rig last week, and one who was found holding onto a car’s wheel axle for 16 kilometres (10 miles).

Certainly not the sleepy animals you thought they were.
