12 July 2024 – The Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) has announced more than a dozen new Olympic venue allocations, using extraordinary arenas and locations in the City of Los Angeles and the neighbouring cities of Carson and Long Beach to provide an unparalleled experience for athletes and fans.

This latest announcement is part of LA28’s ongoing process to finalise its masterplan and follows the venue updates that were revealed in June. Aligned with the recommendations of Olympic Agenda 2020, it represents a continuing commitment on the part of the organisers to leverage existing infrastructure to reduce the need for temporary construction.“The 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games will reflect all that the Los Angeles area has to offer, and with these venue assignments, we’re very proud to bring the Games to many of our vibrant and diverse communities,” commented LA28 Chief Athlete Officer Janet Evans.“The City of Los Angeles will host more Olympic sports than anywhere else, and Carson and Long Beach, which hosted competitions in previous Games, will host more competitions than ever before. The venues in these cities are world-class and provide the ideal conditions for athletes and fans, and we look forward to welcoming them in 2028.”

Olympic sports in the heart of LA

The announcement brings the number of sports taking place in Los Angeles to 10, with diving, athletics and gymnastics having been part of the previous announcement in June. Among the latest venue assignments, badminton will be played at the University of Southern California (USC) Sports Center, a top-quality indoor arena that is the home of the USC’s basketball and volleyball teams.

The Convention Center in downtown Los Angeles, which was used at the Olympic Games Los Angeles 1984 as the Main Press Centre, will host five Olympic sports in 2028: fencing, judo, table tennis, taekwondo and wrestling. Weightlifting will take place at the nearby Los Angeles Theater, also in the downtown area of the city.

Across town in the Pacific Palisades neighbourhood, golf will be played at the Riviera Country Club, which is considered one of the top courses in the country, having previously hosted several major championships.

World-class venues in Carson

In the City of Carson, the world-class sports complex that is home to the LA Galaxy football team will host track cycling, hockey, rugby sevens and tennis. The velodrome, which has been refurbished since hosting track cycling at the Olympic Games Los Angeles 1984, is an official US Olympic training site. The tennis venue is home to the US Tennis Association’s high-performance training centre, while rugby sevens will be held in the same stadium that regularly hosts the World Rugby Sevens Series. The fields adjacent to the stadium are currently used as a training facility for LA Galaxy, and will be transformed into a world-class temporary hockey venue featuring the latest artificial turf technologies.

Long Beach to welcome a diverse mix of sports

There will be a number of water-based sports venues in the City of Long Beach, which has a rich Olympic history, having hosted archery, fencing, sailing and volleyball in 1984. The relocation of the rowing and canoe sprint events to Marine Stadium – which staged rowing at Los Angeles 1932 – will see athletes compete in the heart of Long Beach.

Sailing will be held in the waters along Belmont Shore; the marathon swimming and triathlon races will be on the waterfront along Alamitos Beach; and water polo will take place in a temporary aquatics venue at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center, in addition to artistic swimming, as previously announced. Handball will be in the sports arena which is part of the same complex.

Evolving the venue masterplan

This latest announcement includes venues that are unchanged from the original 2017 candidature plan, along with new venues. The venue assignments have been assessed in consultation with each International Federation and approved by the IOC Executive Board, and follow the completion of Games Agreements with the venue cities of Carson and Long Beach.

In the months ahead, LA28 will announce additional venue assignments in the City of Los Angeles and elsewhere, including for new sports that have been added since LA28’s original 2017 candidature plan.

The Olympic Games LA28 are due to take place between 14 and 30 July 2028, followed by the Paralympic Games, which will be held from 15 until 27 August.
