Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe engines fire up after summer break in Barcelona
Spanish venue hosts the penultimate weekend of the 2022 season
Sant’Agata Bolognese, 27 September 2022 – After a summer break of 62 days, the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe season heads into the second-last meeting of the year at the iconic Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The one-make championship, reserved for Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO2 machinery, still has a number of titles to be decided, with 24 drivers already standing on the top step of the podium so far this year.
The championship returns to 4.655km Barcelona track for the first time since 2020 and fourth time in the history of Super Trofeo Europe. Previous appearances at the Spanish venue came in 2011 and 2009.
At the top of the Pro class are the runaway leaders from Bonaldi Motorsport, Loris Spinelli and Max Weering who can wrap up the drivers’ title this weekend. The dominant forces all season, the crew of the #61 car will be looking to bounce back from an uncharacteristically off weekend last time out at Spa-Francorchamps, where they failed to win either race. Despite this, Spinelli and Weering remain 37 points clear of BDR Competition’s Amaury Bonduel, who claimed a breakthrough maiden Super Trofeo victory on home soil at Spa in July. Third in the standings is another pairing which took their first race victory together: Target Racing’s Marzio Moretti and Milan Teekens, while the solo Imperiale Racing entry of Manuel Bejarano lies fourth in the points. Joining the Pro class for this weekend will be a number of new faces, with Sebastian Freymuth racing for AKF Motorsport, while Stuttgart by Target Racing will field Daniel Keilwitz and Marioneck Lennart. Elsewhere in Pro, touring car outfit Brutal Fish Racing will enter the category with experienced hand Edoardo Liberati partnering team owner Martin Ryba. After making his debut at Misano, Adrian Lewandowski – the son of Andrzej – will return at the wheel of the #55 GT3 Poland car.
The battle for Pro-Am honours this season has been one of the best for years, and the Oregon Team pairing of Lewis Williamson and Massimo Ciglia will be aiming to continue their run of strong form in Barcelona. Already a winner four times this year – with a further three second places – the Scottish-Italian partnership has a 24-point lead over the Rexal FFF Racing Team crew of Oscar Lee and Dan Wells heading into the weekend. Behind, the Target Racing entry of Milan Petelet and Dmitry Gvazava are third ahead of VS Racing’s Emanuele Zonzini and Emanuel Colombini. Meanwhile, Micanek Motorsport’s Bronislav Formanek and Karol Basz will be looking for a positive weekend after missing both races at Spa-Francorchamps due to mechanical issues and car damage.
In the Am standings, it could not be any closer as three crews are split by just four points heading into the final two rounds of the year. With the title still very much to play for, Barcelona represents a crucial stage of the season, especially for points leader Stéphan Guerin (Arkadia Racing). He’s just three points clear of Leipert Motorsport’s Gabriel Rindone, who took three wins out of four races at the start of the campaign. A further point behind is VS Racing’s Andrzej Lewandowski, who also has three victories to his name this year. New for this weekend will be the Lithuanian-Latvian combination of Audrius Butkevicius and Arturs Batraks who will drive for RD Signs Racing Team, while returning to Super Trofeo will be 2015 Am champion and 2019 Pro-Am champion Shota Abkhazava. Diego Locanto will make his debut for Target Racing.
Multiple Lamborghini Cup champion Gerard van der Horst remains on course for another title at the top of the standings. Three victories, two seconds and a third place have left the popular Dutchman 20 points ahead of Rexal FFF Racing Team’s Donovan and Luciano Privitelio. A more distant third is Hans Fabri (Imperiale Racing), some 58 points further back. Belgian siblings François and Benoît Semoulin are three points adrift in fourth.
The weekend’s action begins with two one-hour free practice sessions on Friday, while the pair of 20-minute qualifying sessions are scheduled for Saturday morning. The first of two 50-minute races, with a rolling start, takes place on Saturday at 15:40. Race 2 will start on Sunday morning at 10:30. Both races will be streamed live worldwide on the Lamborghini Squadra Corse YouTube channel.
