Land donated to NT and will see “Shooting Stars”

Cayman-BracSisters, Shirley, Barbara, Louise, and Carol Herrman have given a second gift of land on Cayman Brac to The National Trust. The donation of 8.6acres of land is in memory of the late Dr. Roy Herrman and Estelle Herrman.

The first donation from the family, made in 2004, comprised 17.5 acres.

Both gifts of land were made through the International Reptile Conservation Fund.

The Herrman sisters, in a written statement to the Trust said, “In fond memory of our parents, Dr. Roy and Estelle Herrman, we gift our Cayman Brac land to the Trust to help maintain a pristine home for rare birds and animals. We have very fond memories of time spent on Cayman Brac and the white sandy beach overlooking sparkling blue water, and this is our way of giving back to such a beautiful island.”

The combined acreage, totalling 26.1 acres, includes the Splits, an inland freshwater ecosystem now protected in perpetuity. The Splits is a nesting site for two species of heron, home to two endemic species of freshwater fish and a popular watering hole for local and migratory birds.
