UPDATE: Container ship poses no threat. Large Container Ship With Engine Failure Adrift Close to Little Cayman. Cayman Islands Government Closely Monitoring Situation

UPDATE: The SC MONTANA, a Container Ship,  poses no threat to Little Cayman and is drifting away away from the Cayman Islands.

The SC MONTANA, a Container Ship sailing under the flag of Liberia developed  engine failure on Tuesday (2) in waters near Little Cayman. It is still there today and all efforts are currently being made to keep the ship afloat.

The Container Ship has a length overall (LOA) is 207.55 meters and her width is 29.86 meters and all the docks close by at Cayman Brac and Little Cayman have not the capacilty to deal with it.

The Cayman Islands Coast Gurad has said a port authority tug, The Navigator, is helping  two bulk carrier vessels, LEFKES and the Aruna Cihan to keep it away from Little Cayman’s coastline.

There is still a potential risk to the environment and Premier, Juliana O’Connor-Connolly and Deputy Governor, Franz Manderson have met with local government agencies, including Hazard Management Cayman, and other stakeholders to discuss the the current situation.
