Latin America and the Caribbean receive multiple accolades in World Travel Awards
Latin America and the Caribbean stood out during the latest ceremony of the prestigious World Travel Awards. Over 200 industry experts were on the judging panel that honoured Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador and Jamaica with multiple accolades in different categories.
Latin America and the Caribbean receive multiple accolades in World Travel Awards
Created in 1993 with the aim of recognising, rewarding and celebrating excellence across the different aspects of the travel and hospitality industries, the World Travel Awards are an event that tourism professionals look forward to every year. The 2017 ceremony took place in the JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort and Spa, situated on the South Coast of Vietnam. Many of the night’s most important accolades were presented to locations within Latin America and the Caribbean.
Over 200 tourism experts were part of the judging panel that voted and declared the winners in several categories. Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador and Jamaica were the countries that received the most accolades in the region. The most significant prizes these countries were honoured with were:
Chile – Best Adventure Destination in the World 2017
This the second time the country wins in this category, proving the country’s great appeal thanks to its stunning nature and impressive landscapes full of contrasts: from the Atacama desert and the Torres del Paine National Park to the geysers of Tatio and the San Rafael glacier.
Ecuador – Best Eco-friendly Destination
For the fifth year in a row, Ecuador wins the award for most eco-friendly destination thanks to its amazing flora and fauna, which is protected throughout more than 20 national parks, eco-reserves and marine and wildlife refuges. Some of the most popular spots include the Andes mountains, the Amazon rainforest and Galapagos Islands.
Galapagos Islands – Best Beach Destination
Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands, a natural paradise, declared a World Heritage Site in 1978 boasts one of the world’s most breath-taking white sand beaches as well as black lava beaches and even green-sand beaches, where hundreds of friendly animals interact with beachgoers. Visiting the beaches of the Galapagos Islands is a great opportunity to observe pelicans, iguanas and sea lions up close.
Jamaica – Best Cruise Destination
For the tenth consecutive year, Jamaica swooped up the award for Best Cruise Destination. The island’s people, white-sand Caribbean beaches and its four ports complete with exceptional hotels and the beauty of its untouched nature, all contribute to its great popularity amongst travellers.
Bolivia – Best Cultural Destination
Thanks to the country’s efforts in promoting the cultural richness and highlighting the value of its heritage and traditions, Bolivia has been voted the most fascinating destination in terms of culture. The local government has declared that Bolivia is home to over 36 different ethnics; from native Indians to Afro-Bolivians.
Peru – World’s Best Culinary Destination
Peru was voted the world’s best destination in terms of culinary greatness for the sixth consecutive year. Boasting a rich, interesting and delicious cuisine, the country is home to three restaurants that are listed amongst the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.
Machu Picchu – Best Tourism Attraction
Formerly the capital of the Inca Empire, Machu Picchu is one of Peru’s most visited attractions. Travellers are fascinated by its beauty and amazing historic value.
Peru, in particular, was highly praised with a total of 29 nominations last year including destinations, hotels, airports and travel agencies. In 2014, Peru was chosen as the best gastronomic and cultural destination and its capital Lima was voted best cultural destination in South America. According to surveys run by the Peruvian government, tourists’ level of satisfaction was 94% after they visited the country.
