Lauryn Hill does the time for doing the crime
CONNECTICUT, United States, Friday July 12, 2013 – Multiple Grammy award-winning singer Lauryn Hill is currently behind bars at the start of a three-month prison sentence in Connecticut for tax evasion.
According to a spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the singer had reported right on time to a minimum security prison in Danbury.
The former Fugees singer will serve her time with the general population at the Federal Correctional Institution of Danbury, where prisoners live in open dormitory-style living quarters and work in jobs such as food service, maintenance or landscaping.
Following her release from Danbury, the 38-year-old will be under parole supervision for a year, with the first three months to be spent confined to her home.
The singer was sentenced in May for failing to pay tax on US$1.8 million of her earnings between 2005 and 2007.
After Hill had entered a guilty plea last year, her lawyer had sought probation for the singer, arguing her charitable works, family circumstances and the fact that she later paid back the taxes she owed should merit consideration.
During her sentencing, the longtime love of Rohan Marley said she had intended to pay the taxes, but was unable to do so after withdrawing from public life and ending her music career to raise her children.
Hill was just a teenager when she burst onto the international music scene with hip-hop group The Fugees.
She went on to release her acclaimed solo debut album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, in 1998 and shot to superstardom as the album went on to win five Grammy awards and sold more than 19 million copies worldwide.
