Liquor stores can now stay open until 10pm

liquorFurther to our story published 16th September “Embattled battered booze board” where iNews Cayman revealed the board were unable to consider 12 applications from five different George Town retail liquor license holders who had applied to extend their opening hours to 10pm because of conflicts of interest with three of the five board members, all the license holders have been granted their wish.

 

Letters were sent out by Grand Cayman’s Liquor Licensing Board’s chairman, Mitchell Welds, exercising his power “under Section 13 of the Liquor Licensing Law to approve the variance” to all the various liquor stores’ license.

 

“The chairman’s decision is effective immediately, but will be subject to ratification by board members during their next quarterly meeting, the letter said.

 

The Liquor Licensing Board is under an investigation of alleged corruption from the board by the Cayman Islands Anti-Corruption Commission and the Department of Commerce and Investment has formed a review committee to look into the legal and operational structure of the liquor board.
