Little Cayman’s Agriculture Show, scheduled for 23 March at the Little Cayman Museum and Marine Museum Grounds, is shaping up to be an educational and fun event.

The show’s theme, ‘Come Grow with Us’, highlights Premier Hon Juliana O’Connor-Connolly’s  policy of encouraging backyard farming across all three islands.

“Little Cayman is a small community and is therefore an ideal place to test the sustainability of the “grow what you eat and eat what you grow” concept. I am pleased that Little Cayman residents take the sustainability approach seriously and the fact that they share with each other is great and a fantastic way of living,” the Premier stated.

“The Agriculture shows are great for families, because they provide so much to do, learn and see. The shows bring together a celebration of local traditions, crafts, produce and entertainment,” she added.

The Premier also thanked the Tibbetts’ family for allowing the Agriculture Show to be hosted on their site and for being one of the top sponsors of the event.

In addition to plants sales from the Department of Agriculture, there will be the popular coconut toss competition, dog show and tractor rides. New features have been added to the show, including the horseshoe pitch and Central Caribbean Marine Institute Quadrille dance team. Localz Band and Little Cayman Baptist Church Choir will also be providing the day’s musical entertainment.

The Fire Department, Health Services and Police Department will also be providing demonstrations throughout the day.

Show organiser Debbi Truchan is encouraging all residents to enter their items for judging the day before the show (Friday, March 22), between 3 and 6PM by bring their pieces they would like to exhibit to the Show Grounds. “We have a growing population of home and container gardeners on island and we hope to see their crops and planters out on display. With that in mind I hope to see an increase in attendance at the event and exhibitions,” she said.

“Little Cayman is well known for its chefs and bakers as well as photographers. We know the judges love the cake competition; it will be a combination of taste and decoration with first prize of  $100, second $60 and third $40. After the judging, the public will be able to taste the entries,” she added.

The opening ceremony is at 10 am and officially closes at 4pm.  The entrance to the Show Grounds has been changed this year to Blossom Village Dr rather than Guy Banks Rd as has been the case for the two previous years.

General admission to the show is $5 for adults or $2 children ages 4 to 10 or $10, which includes a raffle ticket. The raffle’s top prize is $1,000 donated by the Tibbetts Foundation. Telecommunications company LIME is providing a smart phone and there will many more prizes
