Cayman Islands PFL Weekly Review Sir JAC and Savannah Primary share the points

The CUC Primary Football League (PFL) and Girls’ Primary Football League (GPFL) returned to the football fields of Grand Cayman this past Saturday following the one-week mid-term school break.

At the iconic West Bay Town Hall Field, Sir John A. Cumber Primary welcomed Savannah Primary for a full morning of games in the Under 9, Under 11 and girls’ leagues.

In the Under 9 game in front of a fairly large crowd, Savannah Primary outlasted their opponents 1-0 after a very exciting 40 minutes of action. With neither team able to find the back of the net from open play, it took a penalty kick from Savannah Primary captain Ricardo Ebanks in the 26th minute to secure the three points for the visitors.

The Under 11 encounter predictably matched the Under 9 game for excitement and intensity as both schools quickly settled into their respective high-tempo passing games. Both goal keepers were tested early and the crowd settled in for what promised to be a thrilling game.

The home team took the lead in the 19th minute as influential skipper Caleb Fredericks capitalised on some questionable defending from Savannah Primary’s back four. Sir John A. Cumber’s Samuel Hydes added to his school’s lead just before half time in the 25th minute.

Savannah Primary kept it interesting going into the final 12 minute of play when Joshua Acosta slotted home in the 40th minute. Sir John A. Cumber dug deep to keep their single goal lead intact and time ran out for the boys from Savannah. Final score was 2-1 to Sir John A. Cumber.

Results from other games played in Group A played on Saturday included George Town Primary 1 vs. St. Ignatius 4 (Under 9); George Town Primary 0 vs. St. Ignatius 4 (Under 11) and Cayman International School ‘A’ 4 vs. Truth For Youth 0 (Under 9 – respect rule).

In Group B, it was Cayman Prep ‘A’ 3 vs. South Sound Schools 1 (Under 9); Cayman Prep 4 vs. South Sound Schools 0 (Under 11 – respect rule); Bodden Town Primary 1 vs. Prospect Primary 4 (Under 9); Bodden Town Primary 0 vs. Prospect Primary 3 (Under 11); Red Bay Primary 4 vs. Cayman Int’l School

‘B’ 0 (Under 9 – respect rule); Red Bay Primary 4 vs. NorthEast Schools 1 (Under 11); and Cayman Brac 0 vs. Triple C 4 (Under 11).

In the GPFL, Sir John A. Cumber Primary and Savannah Primary battled to a 1-1 draw in their match- up in West Bay. Sir John A. Cumber’s Sumayah Gordon opened the scoring in the 7th minute but the lead was short-lived as Savannah Primary’s Rheann Best powered her way past her opponents defence to bring her school level in the 11th minute. There would be no further goals scored but both sets of young ladies did everything they could on the field in search of that elusive winner.

In other GPFL games, it was George Town Primary 0 vs. St. Ignatius 3, Bodden Town Primary 0 vs. Prospect Primary 4 (respect rule) and Cayman International School 0 vs. Cayman Prep 2.

The 2017 CUC PFL and GPFL regular season continues on Saturday, November 11 with a full schedule of games at the Annex Field, Dart Field, Cayman Prep, St. Ignatius and Bodden Town Primary.
