NRA Tackles Linford Pierson Highway

A major summertime project for the National Roads Authority’s (NRA) is the widening of the Linford Pierson Highway in George Town. This is part of its continued effort to improve the Cayman Islands road network.

The Linford Pierson Highway Widening Project covers about a mile, from the Silver Oaks Roundabout (near to the First Assembly of God church), to the intersection with Agnes Way.  It will provide a much-needed increase in vehicle capacity, and significantly reduce traffic congestion in morning and evening peak hours.

According to past and recent NRA traffic counts, in 2003 the Linford Pierson Highway accommodated about 13,800 vehicles per day; in 2009, traffic volumes averaged about 18,100 cars daily; and in February 2016, daily traffic increased to about 19,350 vehicles.

This improvement project involves widening the road to four lanes and the installation of a center-median.  In addition, there will be improved drainage and street lighting for pedestrians and motorists, and a roundabout will be constructed at the Agnes Way intersection.

Some clearing and minor works have begun in the area over recent weeks, including land-clearing along the roadway. This work will also include the relocation of major utility infrastructure – such as CUC poles and Water Authority mains.

During this month NRA workers are widening the sub-base of the road (mainly the section from the Silver Oaks Roundabout to Halifax Drive), on the south side of the roadway.  As there will be minimal traffic interruptions during this phase, motorists should exercise caution and watch for heavy trucks and equipment entering and exiting the main road.
