Maples and Calder Breaks Own Record for Number of Summer Students Recruited

Maples and Calder (“Maples”) welcomed 23 summer student interns to its Cayman Islands office this year, breaking last year’s record number of 19. Each year, Maples invites applications from young adults who are in the last years of their secondary education or beginning their tertiary education.

The students, who were on vacation from academia, worked through the summer months within various departments and practice areas, further cementing their interest in chosen careers such as law, marketing, information technology, compliance, office administration, information services and human resources.

Amongst the group were several recipients of the Maples Legal and Non-Legal Scholarship Programme, which has directly assisted over 50 Caymanians in their pursuit of further education. Adrian Davey (Corporate), Alexandria Terry (Corporate), Joe Jackson (Investment Funds), Erin Panton (Finance) and Nick Moore (Litigation) are recipients of legal scholarships. Cordell Andrade (Information Technology) is a non-legal scholarship recipient.

The large group of students, ranging from 16 to 23 years of age, represented a wide spectrum of academic backgrounds. Three are high school students, 10 are receiving their education at overseas universities and 10 have remained on island to further their education at the local law school and colleges. Of the 23 students, 15 were returning to embrace the opportunity to annually secure part-time employment with the firm.

“Each year we are delighted to take in eager students and show them the inner workings of our law firm and office environment,” said Global Managing Partner of Maples, Henry Smith. “We hope the knowledge they gain from their experience with us assists them in making the important decision on their future career paths. We wish them success in their endeavours and look forward to seeing many of them again next year.”

Summer employment at the firm runs between May and September and, whilst scholarship recipients may have first preference, new applications are considered on a first come, first served basis and may be sent to Renee Thompson at [email protected] for the 2013 cycle.
