Maples and Calder Grants Six Non-Legal Scholarships
Maples and Calder (“Maples“) announced today that it has granted its 2012 non-legal scholarships to Abigail Bush, Briana Bergstrom, Chevis Dilbert, Jovonnie Anglin, Lloyd Barker and Jordan Ebanks.

We’re delighted to assist these dedicated students in achieving their goals.”
Maples and Calder is one of only two law firms on the island which has implemented a non-legal scholarship programme. The programme, which has been running for over ten years, provides partial funding for school expenses each year for the duration of the student’s tertiary education. It is intended to supplement the student’s financial assistance package.
Abigail Bush graduated from John Gray High School in June 2010. During her time at John Gray she was Head Girl, co-Editor of the school yearbook, vice-president of the Prom Committee and a member of the swim team. Upon graduation she was awarded the Student of the Year award and was recognised for her service as Head Girl and as being one of the top 14 students with the best report cards over the previous three years. Upon receipt of her external exam results, she was recognised as an Honour Student of 2010. She has begun her tertiary education studying for an Associate of Arts Degree in Social Studies at the University College of the Cayman Islands (“UCCI“). The Maples non-legal scholarship will assist Abigail in obtaining a Bachelor of Science Degree in Childhood Studies from the University of Bristol. Abigail hopes to pursue a career in the field of Child Psychology.
During her A-Level studies at St. Ignatius High School, Briana Bergstrom volunteered as a Teaching Assistant for reception art classes. She credits this experience with sparking her interest in becoming a teacher. Briana was also a member and Secretary of Key Club and actively involved in the musical programme, which included the opportunity to direct the school’s rendition of Oklahoma in 2009. Briana’s work experience with children over the past few years has helped solidify her passion and commitment to early childhood education. She recently obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education and Early Childhood Studies from The University of the West of England, and has earned a prestigious acceptance to the University of Oxford where she will work toward her Master of Science degree in Child Development and Education.
Chevis Dilbert studied Physics, Mathematics, Economics, Chemistry and Law during his A-Level courses at Cayman Prep and High School. The Maples and Calder non-legal scholarship will assist Chevis in obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toronto.
Jovonnie Anglin is a 2011 graduate of the Layman E. Scott Sr. High School, where he was a successful participant in sports, literary and oratory competitions. He received an honourable mention in the Commonwealth Essay competition, was a finalist in the ‘My Cayman’ essay contest and won first place in the UCCI essay competition for high school students. Jovonnie was also winner of the inaugural oratorical contest titled the Optimist Club of Grand Cayman. Jovonnie began his tertiary education at UCCI, where he studied Sciences. He will attend the University of Massachusetts Boston studying for a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering and Physics.
Lloyd Barker will pursue an undergraduate degree in Business Law with a minor in Communication Studies at Carleton University, after which he hopes to complete his Master of Law and Doctorate of Law degrees. Lloyd has made great achievements across a broad range of activities, such as the performing arts, Junior Achievement, track-and-field, orchestra and choir. He graduated as Valedictorian from Wesleyan Christian Academy in 2011 and went on to study Economics at UCCI.
Jordan Ebanks graduated with Honours from John Gray High School in 2010 and recently earned his Associate of Applied Science degree in Computer Science from UCCI. The Maples and Calder non-legal scholarship will assist Jordan in obtaining his Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology from Florida International University.
The Maples and Calder non-legal scholarship is offered on an annual basis and is available to Caymanians who wish to pursue an undergraduate or post-graduate degree in any field. The firm also awards annual legal scholarships. The application process usually begins in May of each year.
