Men’s Squash’s Julian Jervis represents Cayman Islands in Pan American Squash Championships

By Haley Hunt From GW Sports

Senior co-captain gains international experience

The World Squash Federation Pan American Squash Championships hosts the world’s top players for competition across five divisions: men’s and women’s doubles and singles, and mixed doubles. This year, teams from 20 countries met in the Cayman Islands from Aug. 26 to Sept. 1 to compete for seven titles and the opportunity to qualify for the prestigious 2019 Pan American Games.

Men’s Squash’s Julian Jervis was one of four men selected to play for Team Cayman. In the first round, the GW co-captain upset 17/32 seed Jaimie Pinto of Chile in a narrow five games 9-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-6, 15-13: the longest match of the tournament’s opening day. Jervis called the victory one of the toughest of his career.

“Probably my most competitive win,” said Jervis. “I remember I was on court saying ‘geez, I really hope I can win this, it would be such a big confidence boost for me.'” I’ve been known for going into five setters with a negative mentality and tank it, but this is such a big moment for me as a squash player to win one of these.”

Jervis fell to the 9/16 seed Christopher Binnie of Jamaica in the second round. He also competed in the softball doubles division with teammate Jacob Kelly. The pair fell 5-11, 6-11 in the opening round to a difficult matchup in 5/8 seeds Diego Gobbi and Vinicius Rodrigues, both from Jamaica.

“The experience is one I don’t think I’ll ever forget,” Jervis said. “I really carry my flag with pride and give everything I have for the team and the feeling of being able to do that in my home country for a crowd of people that I know so well was one of the best feelings I’ve ever experienced.”
