Message for World Food Day,2024 by the Honourable Johany Jay Ebanks, MP

On this World Food Day 2024, we are filled with optimism in the Cayman Islands as we reflect on the progress we have made in ensuring the “Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future.” Through the continued implementation of our Cayman Islands Food and Nutrition Security Policy (CINFSP), our achievements over the past three years have brought us closer to sustainable food security and agricultural prosperity.

In observance of World Food Day 2024, we have created a Cayman Islands World Food Day Score Card, a testament to our hard work and numerous accomplishments. These successes will undoubtedly have lasting impacts, benefiting future generations.

We will continue to make the necessary decisions to increase the availability of locally produced food.

With amendments to the Farmers Identification and Registration Programme (FIRP) and the introduction of a new benefit programme for farmers, Caymanian farmers are empowered to bring more produce to tables across our country. The Plant Protection Act and the upcoming Animal Bill focus on safeguarding our agricultural resources, while climate-smart initiatives are engaging our children and young adults in food production. Similarly, our National Livestock Development Programme, featuring the red poll nucleus herd, continues to enhance agricultural resilience. Additionally, the expansion of our abattoir services benefits both local farmers and consumers. These efforts are yielding rewards in developing a sustainable and thriving agricultural sector for all.

As we join the international community in observing World Food Day 2024, let us commit to doing our part, while supporting our regional and international development partners to fast-track the Sustainable Development Goals.

Let us continue to nurture a legacy of growth, unity, and prosperity that will benefit generations to come through a brighter, more food-secure future in the Cayman Islands.
Happy World Food Day!

With optimism and gratitude,
 Honourable Johany Jay Ebanks, MP
Minister of Planning, Agriculture, Housing, Infrastructure, Transport and Development
 Cayman Islands
