Minimum Wage Advisory Committee gives public final chance to have their say
The Minimum Wage Advisory Committee (MWAC) will be submitting to Government by the end of February 2015 their report of recommendations for introducing a minimum wage to the Cayman Islands. However, before the Committee completes their report, they are inviting the public to a round of district meetings to have a final say on this topic of national importance.
From the onset of this exercise, the Committee outlined in its plans that district meetings would be held as a form of public consultation. To date the MWAC has already held nine focus groups for employers, employees, the youth, domestic workers and the unemployed. The Committee also had online surveys for members of the public to complete and contracted the services of the Economics and Statistics Office to carry out the necessary fieldwork to ensure that a reputable sample size was received on the surveys. The committee also accepted written submissions from the public via email or post, and they have made several media appearances to encourage the public to have their say on the topic of a minimum wage for the Cayman Islands.
This final round of public consultation through hosting district meetings is the committee fulfilling its promise and ensuring that everyone in the Cayman Islands has had the opportunity to “Have their say!”
The meetings will begin in Cayman Brac in the Layman E. Scott Snr. High School Hall on Saturday 7th February from 4:00pm to 5:30pm. In Grand Cayman, the meetings will begin in North Side on Monday 9th February at the Craddock Ebanks Civic Centre from 7:30pm-9:00pm. They will then continue in East End at the William Allen McLaughlin Civic Centre on Tuesday 10th, February and in Bodden Town at the James Manoah Civic Centre on Wednesday 11th February. Both meetings will be from 7:30pm to 9:00pm.
In George Town, the meeting will be held in the Town Hall on Thursday 12th February from 7:00pm to 8:30pm and the final meeting will be in West Bay in the Shirley Kidd Memorial Hall at Sir John A. Cumber Primary School on Monday 16th February from 7:00pm to 8:30pm.
All members of the public are invited and encouraged to attend the meeting in their district.
