Drugs seized – Man due in court

Further to our previous release concerning the seizure of 150lbs of ganja on Tuesday, please note:

The 27-year-old man has now been charged with  importation of ganja, possession with intent to supply ganja, and possession of ganja. It is anticipated that he will appear in court later today, Friday 25 October.

The other 2 men have been released on police bail while enquiries continue.

Three men are currently in police custody following an operation in West Bay which resulted in the seizure of 150 ( one hundred and fifty) lbs of ganja.

About 5.30am yesterday, Tuesday 22 October, officers from the Drug and Serious Crime Task Force, Operational Support Unit, K-9 and Uniform Support Group searched a number of homes in the Turtle Crescent area of West Bay. As a result of the operation 150 lbs of ganja was seized and three men, aged 26, 27 and 52 years, were arrested on suspicion of possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply.

The suspects remain in police custody while enquiries continue.

Further to our previous release in relation to the search for missing man Anthony Smith, who was last seen diving into the sea near West Bay public beach on Tuesday 1 October, please note:

The RCIPS has received credible information that Mr. Smith is off island and has been in Jamaica since two days after he was first reported missing. This information is being followed up on, and once confirmed a further update will be provided.

Subject: Police launch search for missing man

The RCIPS has launched a land, air and sea search for a man who was last seen diving into the sea last night near West Bay public beach.

About 9.50pm on Tuesday police officers in a marked police vehicle spotted 33-year-old Anthony Smith, who is the subject of a Fail to Appear warrant in relation to multiple offences before the court, as well as police drug related matters , in a stationary car near to Alfresco Restaurant.

The officers approached Mr. Smith and asked to exit the vehicle. He ran from the officers and dived into the rough seas and the strong tide started pulling him towards the West Bay dock. The officer’s immediately called for assistance and the air operations unit was deployed.

Uniform officers and the Air Operations Unit carried out a shoreline search and a cellphone and shoes were recovered. The search was suspended last night due to the severe weather conditions, but resumed around 7.30am this morning. Marine, Air Operations and uniform staff are currently carrying out searches under the direction of a search coordinator. A shoreline search and other inquiries are ongoing at this time.

Attempts are being made by police to contact any friends or family members of Mr. Smith to ascertain if he has been in contact with them since last night. So far officers have been unable to make contact with any known family members.

The missing man is described as – 5 ft 10 inches, large built, light complextion, wavy hair, usually in plaits.

If anyone has seen Mr. Smith since 9.50pm last night they should contact their nearest police station as a matter of urgency.
