MLAs launch petition
North Side independent MLA Ezzard Miller and East End representative Arden McLean have launched a petition seeking a “one person, one vote” system of single-seat electoral districts by 2013 national polls.
At a Wednesday gathering in George Town to announce their initiative, the MLAs said they sought 4,000 signatures of registered voters, legally compelling government to stage a referendum on the question.
They hoped to submit the petition to Cabinet in early April, giving organisers sufficient time to conduct a November nationwide poll, and shifting the electoral system in time for general elections next year.
