More details of the Cayman Islands National Healthcare Conference

The Cayman Islands National Healthcare Conference 2012 will be held at the Ritz Carlton, Grand Cayman, October 18 – 20.

Officials said that the conference is not just for professionals and experts in the field but for everyone and urged the public to attend and seize the opportunity to participate in defining the health policies that will affect them and generations to come.

Jennifer Ahearn, Chief Officer of the Ministry of Health said The Conference will focus on “Patient-Centred Care: Achieving Quality Outcomes”.

Speakers at the Conference include:

Hon. J. Mark Scotland, JP: Minister for Health, Environment, Youth, Sports, & Culture

First elected member for the Bodden Town in Grand Cayman, the Honourable Mark Scotland is Minister with responsibility for Health, Environment, Youth, Sports, and Culture.

Minister Scotland attended the University of Miami where he received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, returning to Cayman to work as a roads engineer for the Public Works Department. During his 15-year career with at the unit, Minister Scotland rose to Head of the Roads Section, prior to leaving government in 2004 to start his own civil-engineering consulting firm and road-construction company.

Minister Scotland is married to Cindy. They have three children.

Richard Buck, MD, MPH, FACPM: Independent Organizational and Health Care Strategist

Dr. Richard Buck is an independent organizational and health care strategist based in St Louis. He speaks and advises on leadership development, organizational and strategic issues, governance, quality improvement, evidencebased medicine, and patient-centered care.

While at SSM Health Care in St Louis from 2005 to 2006, Dr. Buck served in the newly created position of Corporate Vice President for Organizational Effectiveness and Executive Director of SSM University. He was tasked with creating an integrated leadership development program for over 23,000 staff at 20 hospitals in four states.

During his 23 years as a Naval Medical Officer, Dr. Buck held positions in the “CSuite” for more than 15 years, including 10 years of CEO experience.

During Dr. Buck’s tenure as Commanding Officer (CEO) of Naval Hospital Pensacola, Florida, the hospital received recognition at the Navy, Department of Defense, state, national and international levels – including the 2003 Picker Institute Institutional Award for the “advancement of patient-centered care.”

From 2003 to 2008 Dr Buck served as the Picker Patient-Centered Dimension Expert for Mission, Culture and Leadership.

Dr. Buck is one of the Expert Faculty of the Governance Institute. He has also served as an Advisor to the Medical Leadership Institute and the Patient- Centered Care Institute. Dr. Buck was a member of the American College of Physician Executives’ Task Force on Medical Education

Dr. Buck is the author of the Medical Leadership Institute monograph “Three Essential Skills for Today’s Physician Leaders.”

Dr. Buck graduated from Dartmouth College, attended Trinity College in Oxford as a Marshall Scholar where he obtained an MA in Physiology, and studied at Imperial College London where he was awarded an MSc in Biochemistry. After graduating from Stanford University Medical School, he completed a year as an Assistant Resident in Internal Medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital, followed by a residency in Preventive Medicine at Yale University where he was awarded an MPH in Epidemiology.

Dr. Buck is Board Certified in Preventive Medicine and is a graduate of the Program of Management in Health Care, University of North Carolina Kenan Flager Business School at Chapel Hill.

Barbara Ficarra, RN, BSN, MPA: President, Barbara Ficarra Productions, LLC

Barbara Ficarra, RN, BSN, MPA is founder of Healthin30.com, award-winning broadcast journalist, freelance writer, medical blogger, speaker, health educator, and registered nurse. She is a featured writer for The Huffington Post and she is a leading voice in health offering practical advice for spectacular health focusing on patient engagement and empowerment, health care social media, health IT (mhealth, gamification, telemedicine), doctor|nurse team and healthy living. Barbara began her broadcasting career in radio as creator, host and executive producer of the former award-winning Health in 30® radio show. She is an administrative supervisor for at a large university medical center and covers multiple medical and surgical units, critical care, oncology, cardiology, psychiatric unit, women’s and children’s services, and emergency trauma department. She is multifaceted in her clinical experience, ranging from oncology to general medicine and surgery. Barbara is a patient advocate and she always encourages patients and their families to be proactive and take charge of their health.

Cynthia Hastings-James has an impressive track record with over 15 years of innovation in health promotion, medical education and marketing. With a particular focus on digital solutions, her passion lies in creative problemsolving. Following completion of her BA in Psychology from the University of Western Ontario in 1994, she joined Canada Newswire to lead the development of one of the most successful web sites in Canada, www.newswire.ca. Steven Thompson, MBA: Chief Executive Officer, Johns Hopkins Medicine International | Senior Vice President, Johns Hopkins Medicine

Mr. Thompson has over 25 years experience in various positions within academic medicine and academic health centers. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Johns Hopkins Medicine International and the Senior Vice President of Johns Hopkins Medicine overseeing all of the international activities of Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Mr. Thompson is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Johns Hopkins Medicine International. This organization was established as the arm of Johns Hopkins Medicine providing a focus for all international activities of Johns Hopkins. It is the mission of this organization to establish international programs and businesses that are consistent with and support the Johns Hopkins Medicine mission of excellence in clinical care, research and teaching.
