Around 5:30PM yesterday, Sunday, 20 August, the 9-1-1 Communications Centre received a report of a man driving a Jeep Wrangler coming from Kaibo in East End who had been involved in a minor collision with another vehicle and had continued along Sea View Road. Officers on patrol saw the vehicle traveling along Sea View Road toward town, and began following the vehicle while activating the emergency lights and siren. The driver of the vehicle did not pull over, and officers continued following it at a safe speed and distance while in communication with the critical incident commander.
At the junction of Frank Sound Road and Bodden Town Road the vehicle failed to stop at a road block in place for an ongoing road traffic operation (see following release). The vehicle ran through the road block, traveling in a westerly direction toward Breakers. In the vicinity of house #2628 the driver veered into the eastbound lane and collided with a white pick-up truck. The driver of the Jeep then lost control of the vehicle and ran into bushes on the east side of the shoulder of the road. The driver then attempted to flee the scene on foot, but he was apprehended by officers and arrested on suspicion of DUI, suspicion of dangerous driving (speed) and suspicion of dangerous driving (manner).
Both the driver of the Jeep and the driver of the white pick-up truck were transported to Cayman Islands Hospital for minor injuries. The driver of the Jeep, a man, age 28 of George Town, is now on Police Bail to receive further treatment for his injuries.
