MPE CARIBBEAN REPORT NEWSLETTER – April 21, 2025 – Cayman cruise referendum nears

The MPE Caribbean Report Newsletter offers travel, tourism, Caribbean and global news weekly.

April 21, 2025

A season of reflection, thanks, blessing

As holy events, including Easter Sunday, are observed across the Caribbean, we honor the spirit of faith, family and renewal that defines this sacred season. Cultural traditions ranging from kite-flying in Barbados to bun and cheese in Jamaica and beach camping in the Cayman Islands and U.S. Virgin Islands bring opportunities to connect with loved ones, reflect on life’s blessings, and give thanks for the journey ahead.

At the MPE Caribbean Report we carry these traditions and values with us wherever we are in the world. From the islands to the diaspora, Easter reminds us that light always follows darkness and hope always rises.

As it is written in John 11:25 – “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.”

Caribbean destinations join forces to woo Latin American travelers

The Caribbean put on a united front at World Travel Market Latin America last week, with destinations from across the region joining forces to promote the strength and diversity of Caribbean tourism.

Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Dominica, Guyana, Saint-Martin, and Turks and Caicos were joined by Barbados and the Cayman Islands in a collaborative push to capture the interest of Latin American travelers.

The coordinated presence, supported by the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) and coordinated by CTO Allied Member EM Marketing & Communication based in Argentina, underscored the growing importance of regional cooperation in expanding the Caribbean’s reach in emerging markets.

Port St. Maarten CEO to join town hall as Cayman cruise referendum nears

Alex Gumbs, Chief Executive Officer of Port St. Maarten

Alex Gumbs, Chief Executive Officer of Port St. Maarten, will headline a critical public town hall hosted by The Association for Cruise Tourism (ACT) in the Cayman Islands on Friday, April 25, at the Grand Cayman Marriott Resort.

With the April 30 cruise berthing referendum fast approaching, Gumbs will share firsthand insights into how cruise pier infrastructure has supported economic growth and marine protection in his destination, offering a regional perspective on what’s at stake for Cayman. The event begins with a 6 p.m. meet-and-greet, followed by the town hall at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

ACT is encouraging participation from all sectors of the community – taxi drivers, tour operators, shop owners, hospitality workers, and even those opposed to cruise berthing – in what it describes as a vital conversation about the future of cruise tourism in the Cayman Islands.

Quotable Caribbean

“It’s becoming more and more obvious to us that we need to look at this market (Latin America) for growth for the entire Caribbean region.” –Andrea Franklin, CEO, Barbados Tourism Marketing, Inc. | Chairman, Caribbean Tourism Organization Board of DirectorsPoverbially West Indian

“Bless up.”

This is a popular Jamaican phrase used to greet someone or say goodbye. It’s all about spreading good vibes, showing respect, and wishing others well – Caribbean style.

Medical Moment

World Hypertension Day (WHD), observed annually on May 17, aims to raise awareness about the importance of detecting and managing high blood pressure.

This year’s theme – “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer” – underscores the critical role of accurate monitoring in preventing stroke, heart disease, and kidney complications. Regular screenings, healthy lifestyle choices, and reducing salt intake are essential steps toward better heart health and overall well-being.
