New Exhibitions Open in March

With a new month comes two new exhibitions to view at the National Gallery. Exploring Caymanian vernacular architecture and folklore traditions in turn, these shows celebrate the uniqueness of Cayman’s built heritage and storytelling culture.  “The Cauling: Where the Past Comes Forward to Greet You” 29 February – 31 May 2024 NGCI Dart AuditoriumBased in research assembled by Nasaria Suckoo Chollette as part of her residency with the Cayman National Cultural Foundation, ‘The Cauling’ explores the folkloric storytelling conventions, oral histories and cultural superstitions of the Cayman Islands. The artists represented in this group show explore ‘duppy’ stories through a variety of media including digital art, poetry, performance and sculpture. For additional information, click here. “Thatch Roofs and Ironwood Posts” 10 March – 12 July 2024 Lower Exhibition HallAn exhibition exploring the architectural traditions of the Cayman Islands through technical renderings, watercolour portraits of domestic homes and contemporary responses to ongoing conversations around built heritage. For more information, click here.

New Works on display in the National Collection Exhibition

Upper Exhibition Hall

See new additions to the current National Collection exhibition, “The Ties that Bind” on display in the upper exhibition hall now! “The Ties that Bind” examines the ways in which Caymanian artists have chronicled the islands’ cultural evolution, using creative expression to portray a shifting portrait of life in the Cayman Islands. With an overarching focus on social ties, the exhibition explores family and community relationships, bonds with the natural environment and the preservation of cultural heritage. What’s On: Education

Now Booking Tours for Spring Exhibitions Available Online Explore culture, heritage, and curricular topics at the National Gallery by booking a guided tour of Thatch Roofs and Ironwood Posts, The Cauling, or the National Collection. Tours are offered to all schools and camps at no cost, with a $5.00/student fee for added studio art activities. Contact [email protected] or complete our tour request form here.

NGCI Education at Local Career Services The Creative Careers programme aims to provide Cayman’s next generation with opportunities to develop skills and gain valuable experience in their pursuit of a creative career. As part of this effort, the Education Department has recently hit the road to engage with students at the Clifton Hunter and John Gray High School career fairs and John Gray mock interviews event. Catch us next at the Chamber of Commerce Career Fair on 22nd March!
