on display in the Dart Auditorium of the National Gallery and we’re excited to start work on the new sculpture with Davin Ebanks for the National Gallery’s roundabout.
A Seascapes Success
Artists Christel Ibsen and Judy Mir hosted two days of art classes at the National Gallery last weekend. Ginny Copley, Education Manager said “The Seascapes workshops were a great success thanks to the skill and enthusiasm of Instructors Christel and Judy and the hard work of the students. Each student arrived with a blank canvas and left with a wonderful piece of art.”
Students told us that it was “fantastic”, “wonderful” and that they had “great instruction”. The National Gallery’s Deutsch Bank Intern, Kieshona Brown attended the workshop and said “It was a wonderful experience. Christel shared techniques with us that made it possible to create a great end product we used simple steps to develop a work of art that I’m very proud of. Now that I have learnt the techniques I will be using them to create more seascapes and experiment with different scenes.”
As well as sharing the secrets of their art, Christel and Judy also kindly donated their fee to the National Gallery. Thank you for your generosity, Christel and Judy!

Call for Photographers
Ivan Remembered is an exhibition that will commemorate the ten-year anniversary of Hurricane Ivan. Featured photographers include Courtney Platt and David Wolfe, whose stunning photos of the aftermath of the storm formed part of NGCI’s 2004 Emergence exhibition, along with other members of the Cayman Islands community.
The exhibition will consist of 30 large format photographs, interspersed with quotes from the public remembering their experiences – both challenging and uplifting – during and after Hurricane Ivan. A short film, which was created by NGCI and Monster Media as part of Emergence and featuring well-known local artists, will also be on display.
NGCI is extending an invitation to exhibit to local photographers. We are seeking works with creative vision, in accordance with our position as an art gallery, although exceptional representational photography which provides a documentary visual account will also be considered. Please note that the successful images must be minimum 300 dpi and 2MB, or more, in size.
Photographers interested in participating in the exhibition are invited to submit works for consideration by the NGCI Exhibitions Committee.
DEADLINE for submissions is 25 April 2014.
The exhibition will run from 4 September – 27 September 2014 in the Lower Exhibition Hall (Main Gallery).

ARTicles in the News
Sculpture can be a powerful way of memorialising important contemporary and historical events. Recently, Norwegian artist Jonas Dahlberg was selected as the winner of a competition to create a memorial for victims of the deadly massacre on the island of Utøya, Norway in 2011. Dahlberg’s vision includes removing a three metre-wide slit from a peninsula in the island.
