New manager of Coastal and Marine Governance and Livelihoods Programme

header_1Bridgetown, Barbados (TDN) — The Caribbean Natural Resource Institute (CANARI) welcomes Mr. Terrence Phillips as new manager of its Coastal and Marine Governance and Livelihoods Programme.

Terrence joins CANARI after a distinguished career in fisheries governance and management across the Caribbean, starting with his work in the Fisheries Department in his native Guyana to recent work in the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM).

He brings key strengths in technical aspects of Caribbean fisheries management and development, participatory fisheries governance, and programme and project development and management.

This expertise will be invaluable in helping to further develop CANARI’s Coastal and Marine Governance and Livelihoods Programme. This Programme will benefit from decades of work done by CANARI in the Caribbean linking coastal and marine resource management with livelihoods and poverty reduction; for example participatory fisheries management in the sea urchin fishery and participatory marine protected area management in the Soufriere Marine Management Area in Saint Lucia. This body of work is documented in CANARI’s publications.

CANARI continues its work on building the capacity of fisherfolk to participate in fisheries governance under a current EC-funded project Enhancing food security from the fisheries sector in the Caribbean: Building the capacity of regional and national fisherfolk organisation networks to participate in fisheries governance and management in this Programme.

This is being implemented in partnership with the Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES) of the University of the West Indies Cave Hill, the Caribbean Network of Fisherfolk Organisations (CNFO), the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) and Panos Caribbean.
