U.S. government takes action on fraudulent child adoption in Uganda
Two judges, a lawyer, and an associate in the East African country were hit with financial sanctions and visa restrictions for their involvement in a fraudulent scheme which used bribery to traffic children into adoption in the United States. Uganda is struggling to tackle fraudulent adoption, along with the related issue of orphanage trafficking. Read more… |

Little improvement to World Cup working conditions in Qatar
A new report from Human Rights Watch has found that despite the Qatari government’s promises to improve, working conditions on sites for the 2020 FIFA World Cup remain poor; all of the 95 migrant workers interviewed reported wage abuse. Much of the abuse is linked to the kafala sponsorship system, which effectively ties migrant workers to their employers and facilitates a wide range of abuses. Read more…
Malawi campaigner: dissolve child marriages performed during lockdown
A senior traditional leader in Malawi has instructed village chiefs to dissolve all child marriages that took place during the country’s pandemic lockdown, in a campaign backed by the government and women’s rights groups. Already a widespread problem in the country, the pandemic has increased child marriage rates further as lockdowns have forced girls out of school.Read more…
