New volunteer organisation teams up with Crisis Centre for first annual ‘Donation Day’

08_things-women-should-make-time-for-baseball-volunteer_mediumA new organisation called ‘Women in Cayman’ is teaming up with the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre for the first annual ‘Donation Day’ next Saturday (8 February).

Women in Cayman is a network of women in the community who make themselves available to organisations who need volunteers for events or projects. The group, which initially started on social media, has a few charities and organisation on board, including HMP Fairbanks, The Rotaract Club of Grand Cayman and the N.C.V.O.

The first annual ‘Donation Day’ is in an effort to drive donations to the shelter and raise awareness of domestic violence in Cayman.  Since 2003, the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre has been helping women and their children create new violence-free lives for themselves. Renovated in 2012 through overwhelming community support including donations, in-kind gifts, and hours and hours of volunteer time, the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre has been transformed into a welcoming place for healing. With room to shelter 18 women and their children, the Home is in a secure, private location with onsite 24-hour security.

Women in Cayman founder, Monica Walton said: “We are proud and delighted to be involved in such a great initiative with the Crisis Centre that will aid others in the community. WIC is dedicated to empowering and inspiring confidence in women in particular. We hope people come out to donate and give back to those in need.”

The Cayman Islands Crisis Centre’s Director, Ania Milanowska-Sedgley said: “This drive will make such a difference to the women and children at the shelter. The community has been very supportive with the in-kind donations and although they are incredibly important to us, because of the confidential location of the CICC, we were unable to invite the donors to drop off the gifts at the Centre. We are pleased to be working alongside Women in Cayman and we’re grateful to have so many volunteers committed to supporting other women. The WIC initiative will ensure more convenient process of making donations to the CICC”

The WIC volunteers will be collecting and sorting donations from 11am-3pm at Mini Warehouse II Unit #226, Industrial Park (next to Subway).
