Dr. Stewart has over 13 years of experience in transcatheter aortic valve replacement procedures, being the second to ever perform this procedure in the United States, and has completed 1,200 since. In Florida, he is the only surgeon to perform valve sparing aortic root procedures, which can enable patients to live without lifelong anticoagulation therapy. Throughout his career, Dr. Stewart has completed over 5,000 open heart surgeries on adults. Approximately 1,000 of these heart procedures have been minimally invasive, a technique, which he is renowned for pioneering, to treat a variety of heart conditions, including complex disorders. These techniques are performed through tiny incisions and result in less pain and a quicker recovery for patients.

Dr. Stewart comes to Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute from Mount Sinai Health System in New York, where he served as director of the Center for Aortic Disease, co-director of the Heart Valve Repair Center and medical director of International Medicine. He has been included on New York Magazine’s list of “Best Doctors” for ten consecutive years. He is an avid marathon runner and tri-athlete, and is a loving husband to Donatella Arpaia and father to a 6-year old son, and twins due October 2018.
Dr. Stewart earned his medical degree at Rutgers University School of Medicine in Newark, N.J. He completed an internship and chief residency in general surgery at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, a research fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

An accomplished educator, Dr. Stewart has instructed medical students and trained physicians from around the world in minimally invasive surgery techniques. While training, Dr. Stewart became ambidextrous when he realized the need to teach from the assistant side of the table.

His clinical research in advanced cardiac surgery techniques has generated more than 50 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of American College of Cardiology and as a peer reviewer for other scientific publications. He also is an invited lecturer at national and international medical symposiums. Dr. Stewart is a Fellow of American College of Surgeons and an active member of several major cardiothoracic surgical societies.
