CUC Powers A Night With the Stars

Senior citizens from across Grand Cayman enjoyed live entertainment, local food, spot prizes and a tour of the Cayman Islands National Museum during A Night with the Stars powered by CUC on Thursday, 12 October 2017.

The Ministry of Community Affairs’ event, co-ordinated by the Department of Children and Family Services in partnership with the CUC and the National Museum, attracted busloads of seniors. Seated in open-sided tents on Goring Avenue, attendees were treated to an afternoon and evening of fellowship, friends and food. District booths decked out with exhibits vied for first place. Attendees also milled around the closed-to-traffic area to inspect the various colourful local art and crafts displays.

Acting Chief Officer Teresa Echenique extended her appreciation to the National Museum and CUC for making the event possible and expressed the importance of such public and private sector partnerships. She also spoke of the stars that guided our seafearers years ago and described today’s seniors as our “super stars” for without them our islands would not be as prosperous as they presently are. This was followed by an address by guest speaker Dr. Steve McField.
Dr. McField spoke of Cayman’s rich history of seafearers and merchant marines. He also spoke of how things have changed in these islands over time.

CUC’s vice president Richard Hew was in attendance and the company’s Chief Financial Officer Letitia Lawrence gave remarks.

The museum’s Director Dr. Peggy Leshikar-Denton escorted attendees inside for back-to-back screenings of a 20-minute film about the history of the Cayman Islands and the museum while others toured the building. “We are proud to have been one of the sponsors for the event and were encouraged that so many older persons attended,” she said. “A Night with the Stars was a multifaceted initiative that helped showcase the rich culture and heritage of the Cayman Islands which guests are a living part of.”

Dinner was prepared by East End United Church and blessed by Zeta Bodden, who sang the National Song. The Lions Club of Grand Cayman assisted with serving while the seniors were being entertained. Visitors were offered many local delicacies including turtle stew, conch stew chicken and Cayman-style beef, served with rice and beans and a variety of side dishes. The buffet-style fare was followed by heavy cake.

Live music was played throughout the evening by Dennom Bodden and Gary Scott.
