Ogier marks 25 years in the Cayman Islands
Ogier hit a major milestone in April, celebrating 25 years in the Cayman Islands.
Established as Ian Boxall & Co on 2nd April 1991 the firms merged with Ogier in 2004 in the first transatlantic merger in the offshore world. The firm has expanded to a team of over 60 staff, and fields one of the most experienced legal teams in Cayman.
The Cayman team has advised recently on a variety of headline matters and market firsts including:
· the establishment of the first Bitcoin fund registered with the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority
· the establishment of a listed $500million sukuk trust certificate programme for a prominent global investment bank
· a record breaking deal for the purchase of the highest value residential sale in Cayman
The managing partner James Bergstrom, who joined the Cayman firm in 1991 soon after it was established, reflected on the developments with the firm: “Ogier has accomplished much over the years. Our success could not have been achieved without the dedication, determination and vision of our team. In particular we have what I consider to be the strongest partner team of any firm in Cayman today”
Ogier has demonstrated a commitment to the Cayman Islands through a variety of community activities, charitable programmes and sponsorships. This year, the firm is focused on supporting Kiwanis, Meals on Wheels and mentoring students through Junior Achievement.
Earlier this year, Paul Ebanks became the third Caymanian trainee lawyer from Ogier to have been called to the Bar in the past 12 months. Training partner Rachael Reynolds said: “We are proud of what we have accomplished thus far with our Articled Clerk training programme.”
Ogier frequently receives global industry accolades, helping to maintain Cayman’s position as a leading financial centre. Most recently, the team has received recognition as the Top Offshore Law Firm in the Alpha 2016 Awards, as well as being ranked as number 1 in five aspects of service most highly rated by clients. The firm was also named Best Offshore Law Firm 2016 by Hedgeweek and Caribbean Law Firm of the Year 2016 by Citywealth.
Looking to the future, James Bergstrom added: “We remain committed to providing our valued clients with the expertise and efficiency that they have come to expect and we will continue grow, strengthening our position as a leader in the industry.”
