OPINION: Hypocritical bashing of Dominican Rep
TO THE EDITOR JAMAICAN GLEANER,
Sir:
I want to point out the hypocrisy with regard to the ruling in the Dominican Republic that children born of Haitian parents would be rendered stateless.
Did you know that in the United Kingdom and its overseas territories children born of immigrant parents (dad and mom) in the British Overseas Territories such as the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, Anguilla, Montserrat and British Virgin Islands are not considered citizens of those territories? They have to leave whenever their parents are leaving.
CARICOM is sympathetic to the British Overseas Territories and should suspend them from the regional body as associate members. Whatever is happening in the Dominican Republic with regard to the Haitians is the same that has happened for years in the Caribbean British Overseas Territories.
The same threat levelled against DR must also be made towards the UK and her babies.
