Oscar Winner Ben Burtt to sound off at Cayman Islands film festival
Legendary, Oscar-winning sound designer Ben Burtt will be part of the Star Wars cast and crew reunion taking place at the second annual CayFilm Cayman International Film Festival this July 4th weekend.
Burtt was the sound designer on both the Star Wars and Indiana Jones film franchises, and is the man behind the creation of some of the most iconic sounds in film, including the hum of the light sabre, Darth Vader’s breathing and even R2-D2’s beeps and boops. His more than 40-year career span as arguably the best sound designer in the business has earned him eight Academy Award nominations and two wins for Best Effects, Sound Effects Editing in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) and Best Effects, Sound Effects Editing in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982). In addition to sound design, Burtt is also an accomplished director and voice actor.
“Anyone who is familiar with the film industry and sound design will appreciate what a coup it is for us to have confirmed Ben Burtt for CayFilm 2016” said Festival Director Tony Mark. “He is considered the top in his field by most people in the business and his presence alone will attract visitors to Cayman. We are so excited for our local filmmakers who will have the opportunity to learn from Ben’s experiences, especially a few young Caymanians I know who are looking to break into the sound design scene. His work spans generations and he will definitely inspire them.”
CayFilm takes place from 1st to 4th July, and includes daily film screenings, question and answer sessions with filmmakers, panel discussions, workshops, exclusive premiere screenings and two celebrity gala events. Opening night will take place on Friday, 1 July and the closing gala will happen on Monday, 4 July and feature an awards ceremony.
Other highlights of the Festival include the 10-year anniversary screening of Haven, Caymanian filmmaker Frank E Flowers’ first movie, and the Star Wars cast and crew reunion.
