Cayman Islands’ Jordan Crooks stunned the men’s 50m freestyle semi-finals at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 to take first in his heat over eight-time Olympic champion Caeleb Dressel and become the second person from his country to ever make an Olympic final, after Cydonie Mothersille in 2008.
The 22-year-old swam the 50 in 21.54 on 1 August and will go into the final with the fourth fastest time.
Right out of the pool and still out of breath, Crooks was already focused on what is to come – tomorrow’s 50m Olympic final, where he will continue to make history as the first Caymanian to ever have a shot at an Olympic medal.
When asked what it means to him to accomplish the major firsts for his nation, he said: “It means a lot.
“I’m grateful for all of the support so far through the meet, so thank you to everybody at home who has been doing an awesome job supporting, and hopefully I can make everyone proud tomorrow.”
