Pedro St. James wants a restaurant

Restaurants have come and gone at Pedro St. James, Savannah, Grand Cayman, and now gone, gone, gone.

No one has been able to operate the restaurant as a successful venture and from back in 2006, Charles Clifford, who was then Minister for Tourism reported an almost $314,000 loss over the previous six years.

Now the Cayman Islands Tourism Attraction Board are advertising for a new owner for the restaurant.

There are even conditions laid down in the advertisement.

“The concept for the restaurant should include plans to provide casual dining during the daytime and fine dining at night”, it says.

According to the advert, the enclosed dining area at Pedro is 1,000 square feet, with a 600-square-foot kitchen/service area and an outdoor terrace of 1,668 square feet.

I wonder how many applications they are going to get?

According to Wikipedia the history of Pedro St. James is:

“Pedro St. James Castle, Pedro St. James, or Pedro’s Castle is the oldest existing structure in the Cayman Islands. Located on the southern coast of Grand Cayman Island, the manor house was constructed in 1780 as the home of plantation owner William Eden. In 1831, it served as a rendezvous point for the first elected parliament in the Cayman Islands; the location has since been known as the birthplace of democracy in the Caymans. During this meeting, the decision was made amongst the island’s leading citizens to vote for elected representatives. Four years later, in 1835, the Slavery Abolition Act was read from the stone archway of the building.

“By the 1970s, the building was reduced to ruin after decades of neglect.

In 1996, a restoration totalling over $6 million transformed the then-abandoned waterfront building.. The two story building and its verandas were rebuilt and reconstructed in the original 18th century style.

“The landmark contains a visitors centre, theatre, exhibits, a gift shop, and cafe.”

Hmmm. CAFÉ!!  That doesn’t sound like “fine dining
