Pete Ribbins Ride

DSC_56413rd Annual Pete Ribbins Ride a huge Cayman Islands success

Cayman Water Company held its 3rd annual Pete Ribbins Memorial Ride on Sunday, August 16 – a ride that was inaugurated as part of the Company’s 40th anniversary celebrations in 2013. The event was held in honour of the Company’s late General Manager, Peter Ribbins, who was cared for by Hospice Care and who was an active member of the Cayman sporting community.

Through registrations and substantial donations from the Company’s Cayman and US staff, CI$3,185 was raised. All proceeds were matched by the Company bringing the total donated to Cayman Hospice Care to CI$6,370. Danielle Coleman of Cayman Hospice Care said “Cayman Hospice Care is extremely grateful to Cayman Water and to all the cyclists, volunteers and spectators that were involved in this year’s ‘Pete Ribbins Memorial Charity Ride’. The event was a huge success with almost 100 cyclists participating! Proceeds from the ride will go directly to ensuring that hospice services remain at no cost to all persons in the Cayman Islands with a terminal illness”.

IMG_7847aSimilar to last year’s ride, this year the turnout was overwhelming, as almost 100 cyclists participated the 40km and 10km friendly rides, in ages ranging from 8 to 75. Refreshments and giveaways were plentiful. Keven Morales of Let’s Talk Sports was the engaging MC of the event. The event was also well supported by the many local businesses that provided a variety of giveaways for the post ride draw, ensuring that it was a resounding success. Over 30 prizes were drawn and special gifts were given to the youngest and oldest cyclists, Joseph Duggan and Ottmar Webber, respectively.

Frederick McTaggart, CEO of Consolidated Water said, “We were very pleased to sponsor the 3rd Annual Pete Ribbins Memorial Bike Ride this past Sunday to raise funds for Hospice Care and thank all of riders that braved the hot weather and participated in the race. We look forward to holding the event again next year.”

The ride, which focused on roads along the western peninsula, traversed the supply route of the Cayman Water Company (CWC), the water utility for the Seven Mile Beach and West Bay areas. Cayman Water Company’s COO John Tonner, an avid cyclist who came up with idea for the event, led the ride.
