PETITION: Ban single use plastic bags in the Cayman Islands

Claire Hughes George Town, Cayman Islands

Plastic grocery bags in the ocean endanger our marine life and therefore our own health as well.

Turtles and other animals can confuse them for jellyfish and eat them with fatal consequences; even if this doesn’t occur with a particular bag, the plastic breaks into small pieces and leaches chemicals into the sea, affecting the whole environment.

Although there are alternatives to plastic bags, they are still used every day; the 5-cent fee in some supermarkets doesn’t deter people, and plastic bags litter the beautiful shores of our islands.

They are being banned in some countries because sea life is dying with stomachs clogged full of plastic.

The Cayman Islands should show the world that our marine environment is of the utmost importance to us by banning single-use plastic grocery bags completely.”

This petition will be delivered to:

  • Cayman Islands Government
  • Hon. Wayne Panton
