P&G Athletes for Good programme: new series celebrates charitable efforts of Paris 2024 hopefuls

05 June 2024 – Ahead of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024, a new Olympic Channel original series – presented with Worldwide Olympic and Paralympic Partner P&G – is celebrating the charitable efforts of a number of the athletes recognised in the latest edition of the P&G Athletes for Good programme.

The series profiles the athletes as they prepare for Paris 2024 and showcases the charitable causes they champion, which have each benefitted from a USD 24,000 P&G Athletes for Good 2024 grant.

Each short film in the series highlights the inspirational efforts of the athletes, who are dedicated to making a difference in the world while also pursuing their sporting goals on the biggest Olympic and Paralympic stages.

Those featured include British long-distance runner Eilish McColgan – a three-time Olympian whose charity, Giving Back to Track, aims to increase access to athletics for young people from all backgrounds by removing the financial barriers that may prevent them from taking part. The Athletes for Good 2024 grant has allowed Giving Back to Track to expand its free after-school clubs in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen and start a shoe and spike fund to source athletics footwear for deserving athletes.

The series also features Canada’s Olympic 200m champion Andre De Grasse, who started his own foundation to inspire and empower young people through access to sport, education and healthcare. The Andre De Grasse Foundation partners with other charities on various community initiatives, and it has also launched the Future Championships Scholarship programme, with the goal of removing financial barriers for young people to advance in athletics while providing a pathway for a collegiate scholarship they otherwise might not have access to.

Supporting essential and meaningful work

A joint initiative from the International Olympic Committee, International Paralympic Committee and Worldwide Olympic and Paralympic Partner P&G, the Athletes for Good programme supports Olympic and Paralympic athletes from around the world and the charitable causes that are important to them.

The programme was launched in the lead-up to the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, inspired by the efforts of athletes working in their communities in the areas of sustainability, equality and inclusion, and community impact. It supports charities and causes chosen by athletes, providing funding to help them continue their essential and meaningful work.

Building on the success of the Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022 programmes, which awarded almost USD 1 million to causes supported by athletes, the Paris 2024 edition of the Athletes for Good programme has seen each of the 20 athletes’ chosen charities receive a USD 24,000 grant.

The recipients represent 11 different nationalities across 12 sports, including Olympic and Paralympic medallists, elite athletes and Paris 2024 hopefuls, with the new Olympic Channel original series helping to highlight their philanthropic passion points.

The Athletes for Good initiative supports the Olympic Agenda 2020+5 recommendations, which call on the IOC to continue to develop programmes and platforms for the direct benefit of athletes, and to work with the Worldwide Olympic Partners to develop mutually beneficial purpose-led partnerships, recognising the role of sport as an important enabler for the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals.
