Simple Architectural Photography Tips

Architectural photography, whether classic or coincidental, can be both rewarding and challenging. Build out how to get the extreme shot is not always easy, even though you try and attempt again.

When photographing architecture, a straightforward and simple composition usually works best, showing the natural elegance and desirability of the building. It usually helps to include some of the surrounding scenery to give context to the architecture and make it feel less bound.

Picking the right time of day is key to executing a beautiful architectural photograph. I am not going to tell you the sorcery period of time that you should be doing architectural photography. But different times will result in completely different images. At noon the sun is directly overhead and creates harsh shadows. If you are looking for harsh shadows in your photos then this time is great for you. There could actually be great ardor of a building that could be highlighted by this lighting.

Think outside of the box – Try to find different perspectives and areas to photograph. Always look at the roof from top to bottom of the building you are in to see , if you have something enchanting above your head. Tilt your camera up and use an aperture appropriate to the image , if you cannot use flash, open the aperture to around f/4.

Architectural photography is something that produces timeless images. Always think about lines and shapes, and look for patterns and colors. Keep in mind you can convert any image to black and white later so look for images that are full of shadows and highlights. A building is a motionless thing and you need to move around it to find new perspectives and approach it.

Do your research – If you are shooting either a famous or historic building, it is important to gather some information about the building. Many buildings either have historic significance or important architectural destiny. In either of these cases, you will want to make sure and highlight these aspects. If you really get to know a building, you can learn to applaud the time that went into designing and building it. This will make your photography better and more compelling. Make sure to get well-composed images of special details of the building. These were well thought out pieces of the final product and the images will be cherished for bringing visualization to them.
