Pilot dangles from hot air balloon after strong winds cause total chaos
A sudden burst of strong winds caused chaos for a few hot air balloon enthusiasts in Chatsworth, Illinois, on Thursday.
Wayne Germain was observing the balloons during a Sesquicentennial Heritage Days event when suddenly, disaster struck. He captured the whole incident on film.
According to Germain, the weather had been calm that day, but a strong gust of wind suddenly sent a balloon airborne as it crashed into another. The second balloon briefly lifts off the ground, only to slam down hard just a few moments later.
After hitting the ground, the balloon’s basket is dragged across the ground and lifted back up again. When it hits the ground a second time the balloon’s pilot is partially ejected, and can be seen dangling from the basket as the ballon lifts off again.
Again the basket slams to the ground, and the pilot hanging off the basket falls. The balloon then takes off with two people inside that were not trained to operate the aircraft.
Eventually the balloon did return safely to earth with directions from the ground. Both passengers made it out safely.
According to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, the pilot was taken to the hospital with non-serious injuries.
