ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – A pilot who was raised in Florissant has died in a plane crash in Puerto Rico.

The family of Steve Gullberg II, 28, tells the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Gullberg was piloting a cargo plane Monday night from the Dominican Republic to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The plane disappeared from radar as it flew over the island’s mountainous northern region. Gullberg and his co-pilot died in the crash.

The Florissant native had worked for the Florida-based airline IBC Air for only three months but had expressed concerns about IBC’s safety.

“He said there were some serious maintenance problems and he had some safety concerns,” Steve’s brother Greg Gullberg told the Post-Dispatch. “We’re trying to find out if this airline is knowingly negligent, dabbling with the lives of pilots.”

The Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel reports the National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the crash.

The Gullbergs’ father was a pilot for American Airlines before retiring. Greg Gullberg said it was his brother’s dream to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Greg Gullberg told the Post-Dispatch that Steve considered his job with IBC to be a great opportunity. He was expected to be promoted to captain next month.
