Pioneering U.S. physicians appointed Medical Directors for state-of-the-art prostate cancer treatment centre in George Town, Cayman Islands
The minimally invasive outpatient procedure is approved by NICE.
George Town, Cayman Islands—The International HIFU Prostate Cancer Center (IHPCC) has opened a state-of-the-art, world-class facility in George Town. Led by Medical Directors, Dr. George M. Suarez, M.D., and Dr. Stephen M. Scionti M.D, the IHPCC provides an out-patient treatment for prostate cancer patients using state-of-the-art High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) – a procedure currently undergoing U.S. FDA trials but approved in 2012 by the British National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and previously approved in Europe and Japan in 1994.
“We selected the two most experienced HIFU surgeons in North America to lead our Prostate Cancer Program in Grand Cayman,” stated Brian Carricarte, Director of Operations for the IHPCC. “Our research convinced us that HIFU outcomes and success were directly related to physician experience. Drs. Suarez and Scionti have pioneered HIFU technology in North American and have been directly involved with the training of virtually all North American Urologists. There are simply no other physicians anywhere with their combined HIFU experience.”

“Prostate Cancer patients throughout the Western Hemisphere can now easily access treatment at this state-of-the-art facility,” added Dr. Scionti. “Our mission now is to broaden awareness among all prostate cancer patients and ensure they know about the success and safety of HIFU treatment for their disease.”
HIFU treatment is the least invasive procedure currently available to treat localized prostate cancer. IHPCC utilizes Sonablate 500 technology, which allows an experienced HIFU physician to precisely plan, target and track in real time prostate tissue destruction. HIFU outcomes are consistent with other treatments such as surgery or radiation, but with less collateral damage and an improved ability to preserve urinary and sexual function.
Dr. George Suarez is a board-certified urologist practicing in Miami, Florida and is a recognized leader in the application of HIFU technology for prostate cancer treatment in North America. A former faculty member at the University of Miami Department of Urology, Dr. Suarez was a founder and Medical Director of USHIFU, (the first HIFU center in the Americas).
Dr. Stephen Scionti, a board–certified urologist based in Sarasota, Florida, together they will co-direct medical services at the IHPCC. A former Clinical Associate Professor and Director of Prostate Cancer Ablative Surgery at NYU School of Medicine, Dr. Scionti brings a wealth of knowledge and a decade of experience to the IHPCC program. Dr. Scionti was previously the Director of Clinical Education and Training for USHIFU.
Drs. Suarez and Scionti have, by far, have the most global experience in performing HIFU for the treatment of prostate cancer. They have personally trained most of the physicians practicing HIFU today throughout the hemisphere. In addition, they are co-authors of numerous articles on HIFU, including the most recent physician’s HIFU training manual. They have been an Integral part of FDA HIFU clinical trial providing oversight, physician training and proctoring to the clinical investigators.
HIFU uses ultrasound energy converted to heat to ablate prostate tissue. It is an outpatient procedure requiring no surgical incision or any kind or any ionizing radiation.
