Pirates of the Caribbean 5 in doldrums
The swashbuckling adventure movie – which features Johnny Depp as the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow – was due to be in cinemas in July 2015 but will now be pushed back due to script and budget requirements.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer told The Hollywood Reporter: “We have an outline everyone loves but the script is not done. We want a script that everyone’s signed off on and a budget that everyone’s signed off on.”
Bruckheimer revealed that he is now targeting a 2016 release date for the sequel.
Scared of another flop?
The movie, officially titled Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, was originally scheduled to begin filming in March under the leadership of directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, the same people who worked on historical movie Kon-Tiki.
The delay comes shortly after Bruckheimer and Depp’s latest feature film, The Lone Ranger, flopped at the box office. The Pirates franchise launched with the 2003 release of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and since then has spawned three hugely successful sequels.
The film series have grossed $3.7bn worldwide, making it the fifth biggest movie franchise ever made.
