While the Pirates of the Caribbean movies owe much of their success to the wacky antics of Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow, that’s not the only reason we love these movies. The Pirates franchise has given us some of the most memorable pirate villains and coolest monster designs of any Hollywood blockbuster. From Captain Barbossa to Davy Jones to the mighty Kraken, these villains leave quite an impression.

As we gear up for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth entry in this hugely successful franchise, and the debut of more memorable monsters and pirates, let’s take a look back at the villains who have defined the Pirates series so far.

The Coolest Monsters and Villains in the Pirates of the Caribbean Movies

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, with a screenplay by Jeff Nathanson. The film stars Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, Javier Bardem as Captain Armando Salazar, Brenton Thwaites as Henry, Kaya Scodelario as Carina Smyth, Geoffrey Rush as Captain Hector Barbossa and Orlando Bloom as Will Turner. The film will hit US theaters on May 26.
