A 28 year old police officer, Elvis Ebanks, has denied taking a bribe from a Filipino national in exchange for not pursuing an investigation into a possible theft.

Jury will try the George Town Royal Cayman Islands Police Service Officer on 30^th September 2013.

Ebanks is charged with bribery offences under Cayman Islands’ anti-corruption legislation – 2 counts of corruptly obtaining cash, contrary to section 10 of the Anti-Corruption Law 2008 and 2 counts of breach of trust, contrary to section 13 of the Anti-Corruption Law 2008.

The police officer is accused of extracting nearly CI$650 bribe from a Filipino national in exchange for not investigating how he came into possession of a phone that belonged to a third party.

Ebanks, who is now suspended from duty, claimed the money he reportedly took from the complainant was a loan.

Ebanks is the first serving police officer charged under the relatively new anti-corruption law after he was arrested in Savannah on Wed 14^th November 2012 as a result of information given to the police by his alleged victim.
