KRAKOW, Poland, Friday February 21, 2014 – A Catholic priest suspected of sexually abusing children in the Dominican Republic has been arrested by police in his native Poland.
The clergyman, identified only as “Wojciech G,” is accused of committing sex offences against boys while serving in a position of trust as a parish priest on the island.
The 36-year-old priest was arrested at his home near Krakow on Monday. He denies the accusations.
The “Wojciech G” case marks the third sex abuse scandal to sully the reputation of the Catholic Church in Poland since last summer
In the first, Polish archbishop Jozef Wesolowski was recalled to the Vatican last August amid claims that he sexually molested children in the Dominican Republic.
The 65-year-old archbishop, formerly the papal nuncio (Vatican representative and ambassador) to the Dominican Republic, is one of the highest ranking Catholic Church officials ever to be investigated for alleged abuse.
Then, just a few weeks ago, a Polish man who was abused by a priest as a child announced that he was suing the country’s Roman Catholic Church. The move marked the first such civil case in the country’s history.
Last year, the church apologised to all child abuse victims, but was adamant that it would not pay damages for the crimes of individual clergymen.
Meanwhile, in a report, the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child denounced the Holy See for adopting policies which allowed priests to sexually abuse thousands of children.
The UN added that the Vatican should “immediately remove” all clergy who were known or suspected child abusers.
