PPM says it’s all about the differences, one man rule and fiscal irresponsibility

Hon. Alden M McLaughlin, MBE, JP, MLAThe Peoples Progressive Party Movement (PPM – The Progressives) on Transparency and Accountability

The Progressives decry reports that the Airport Authority’s Board minutes demonstrate a conflict of interest by Board Members. It is this type of behavior that must end if Cayman is to move forward to a positive future.

The backroom deals and shady activities that do not represent the people of Cayman is exactly why, on May 22, it is time to elect a Progressives government because this is where and when this behavior will end.

Conflicts of interest are never good for the people of Cayman, but without proper oversight, as we have seen for the past four years; they have become a way of life in Cayman.

This behavior will end with the Progressives pledge not to appoint members to statutory boards whose personal or business interests could cause any conflicts of interest to arise. It means more work for the government, to make sure these checks and balances are in place. But the Progressives don’t shy away from hard work, transparency or accountability.

In addition, the Progressives promise to further strengthen the standards of good governance and anti-corruption legislation. We have a proud history of doing what is right in this regard. We enacted the Freedom of Information Law in 2007 and the Anti-Corruption Law in 2008. We are going to go further by enacting legislation to give effect to the Commission for Standards in Public Life once we are returned to office on May 22nd.

The Peoples Progressive Party Movement (PPM – The Progressives) on One Man Rule and Fiscal Irresponsibility

The Progressives have pointed out that “controversy and churches is not something for the faint of heart.” They highlight a media article published last Monday (22) concerning churches getting $600K in 2013 from the “controversial Nation Building Fund, championed by disgraced UDP leader McKeeva Bush”.

The Progressives say it is just another one of the many ways he [Bush] and his party and the splintered PNA [People’s National Alliance] have betrayed the hard working people of Cayman.

“What we face is a lack of transparency and accountability by the UDP and the PNA as political organisations,” said Alden McLaughlin, Leader of the Progressives. “We commit ourselves and our Party to meet the needs of the community using transparent, fiscally responsible methods.”

“Church-goers in Cayman need to understand that the Progressives as a responsible government will continue to support their programs through transparent and prudent means. It is not okay to continue the UDP and PNA controversial, back-room  dealings, because with a system like that nobody wins,” said McLaughlin. “We salute the two recipients of Premier Juliana O’Conner-Connolly’s most recent largesse for recognising this and returning the money,” he said.

“All non-profits and faith-based organizations must understand that there needs to be a level playing field, and that only happens when supported programs, scholarships and initiatives are clear, organized and out in the open, as will happen under a Progressive government,” said The Progressives leader.
